Snow-shoeing in Deutschnofen, Obereggen, Eggen and Petersberg, South Tyrol
Snow-shoe trekking is "in". And there is scarcely a region more ideal than this unique winter landscape of South Tyrol, which enjoys guaranteed sun for a full 300 days a year.
Cross-country snowshoe trekking in deep snow, the experts agree, does not just keep you fit, but is the perfect relaxation for mind and soul. Pure wellness, you might say, with the help of this ancient Eskimo invention. The expense, in comparison to a skiing holiday, is also lower. With your snowshoes ready, all you need is a nice stretch of snow to try them out on.
Snowshoe rookies can also get started with just a minimum of practice. The ideal way is of course to start off by taking a reliable guided tour. Apart from this, walking in a group is far more fun. Guided tours in the South Tyrol always keep to environmentally compatible routes, in order to be able to observe wild animals without disturbing them. And there are indeed plenty of beautiful routes near Tiers at the foot of Rosengarten.

A day with snow-shoes
'We are going up ther today', says Martin as he points to the Rosengarten, the legendary mountain range. So on your snow-shoes and off you go. We quickly cover the 200 meters in altitude difference that separate us from the foot of the mountain. The way leads us to Laurin's wall. 'Lunch time,' shouts Martin as we reach Anglwiesen. He couldn't have chosen a more beautyful place. The Latemar and Schlern appear mightily in front of us; our eyes drift far off to the wild and romantic peaks of the Tschamin and to the Vajolet's towers. The crystal-clear winter air makes the mountains look so close that you can touch them. While we enjoy the view, Martin has already set the table for us. Speck, cured ham, sausages, chees and Schüttelbrot (local bread) are waiting for us. And there's even a glass of wine for everyone. This is South Tyrol at is best! As the sun slowly makes its way back to the west, we get ready for our descent across the Traunwiesen.
A superb day is coming to its end!
